 REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION LEVEL:

Bachelor’s degree with teaching certification

EXPERIENCE DESIRED:

Degree in theater or course work in theater, plus training in oral interpretation coaching techniques recommended.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This position requires constant hand-eye and mind-eye coordination and hearing; intermittent repetitive motions with the wrists, hands and fingers, sitting, walking and keyboarding. The position requires frequent lifting, bending, stooping, pulling, speaking, turning, grasping and carrying.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Extensive background in dramatic literature, all forms of prose, poetry and non-fiction. Management skills to organize competitive travel. Willingness to attend SDHSAA rules meetings. Familiarity with all rules governing oral interp competition and National Forensic League oral interp rules. Willingness to commit time to finding selections and one-on-one coaching of interpreters.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & DUTIES

  1. Reads new material and prepares cuttings in the seven oral interpretation competitive categories.
  2. Helps students prepare introductions for their interpretation selections.
  3. Schedules coaching sessions for all competitive interpreters based upon their availability.
  4. Organizes registration for competitive oral interpretation team for up to 14 SDHSAA sanctioned tournaments per year.
  5. Arranges transportation to all out-of-town tournaments in accordance with District policy and procedure.
  6. Arranges lodging and room assignments for the oral interpretation team for tournaments in which an overnight stay is necessary.
  7. Monitors and chaperones all overnights in accordance with District policy and procedure.
  8. Monitors individual behavior of team members to meet acceptable standards of courtesy and sportsmanship reflective of the best traditions of the activity.
  9. Helps oral interpretation team members to dress effectively and appropriately.
  10. Maintains financial accounts of expenditures.
  11. Prepares a team for competition in the National Forensic League Tournament.
  12. Maintains a close relationship with the school’s Booster Club and with the competitor’s families.
  13. Organizes and hosts the year-end oral interpretation banquet (or helps with the combined debate/O.I. banquet).
  14. Keeps a well organized library and/or file of all past interpretation selections.
  15. Keeps a record of all NFL points earned during a student’s oral interpretation career.
  16. Judges interpretation and other forensic events at tournaments attended.
  17. Meets with and communicates to Fine Arts Coordinator on all items of travel, budget, standards, calendar, and schedules.
  18. Performs other duties as assigned.
