Job Title: LIBRARIAN / SOCIAL WORKER
Reports To: Principal or Designee

JOB GOAL: To organize, maintain and supervise the library / media center as a learning laboratory and a resource center for print and non-print materials, serving students and staff with a program that supports the school curriculum and technology programs, and the duties and responsibilities of the Social Worker may include but are not limited to the following:

· Ability to assist in establishing and maintaining an effective learning climate in the school.
· Ability to interpret and implement all Board policies, administrative regulations and negotiated agreements.
· Ability to assist in the development, revisions and evaluations of the curriculum and
instructional services as related to media services
· Ability to assist in the development of school plans and organizational procedures for the
health, safety, discipline and conduct of students as established in district procedures
· Ability to serve as liaison between the school and community, interpreting activities and
policies of the school and encouraging parent and community involvement with the school
· Ability to provide direction to others and to make independent judgments
· Ability to work harmoniously with others and to communicate effectively (both orally and
in writing) with students, parents, teachers and community
· Ability to maintain confidentiality when dealing with student, staff and/or parent information
· Ability to communicate with individuals of varied cultural and educational backgrounds
· Ability to keep and maintain accurate records and to meet deadlines
· Perform physical requirements which may include:
A. Moderate to extensive degree of physical and emotional stamina
B. Frequent and prolonged standing, walking, sitting, stooping and occasional lifting up to 50 pounds
C. Ability to restrain students in emergency situations
D. Frequent and prolonged talking/hearing conversations
E. Possess near/far visual acuity/depth perception
F. Possible exposure to bodily fluids due to student injury or illness
· Such alternative to the above requirements as the School Board or the Administration may
deem appropriate and acceptable
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the duties and responsibilities as stated in the primary administrative assignment and as stated below.
Other duties may be assigned.
1. Instruct students and staff in the necessary information skills and the effective use of the Library/Media Center, materials and related equipment
2. Provide assistance to the building staff in the selection and use of instructional materials and equipment
3. Maintain proper accounting and record keeping systems for library materials and equipment including circulation, distribution, retrieval, collection evaluation and inventory
4. Preview, select, order and process new acquisitions to the media collection according to district policy
5. Serve as a resource for the acquisition of software for the library/media center and for the instructional program
6. Manage the computer software for the library/media center
7. Assist in the audio-visual department providing troubleshooting, equipment maintenance and minor repair and other electronic services as related to media
8. Set and maintain appropriate standards of behavior in the media center
9. Uphold and enforce school rules, administrative regulations and school board policy
10. Participate in the budget development and administer the adopted library/media center budget as assigned
11. Participate in the design and implementation of a K-8 library, media and technology curriculum especially, as it relates to the school improvement process
12. Strive to maintain and improve professional competence through an ongoing program of reading, workshops, seminars, conferences and/or advanced course work at institutions of higher learning
13. Attend staff meetings, department meetings and serve on committees as required
14. Assist in the supervision of library/media assistants, student aides and volunteers as assigned
15. Perform such other tasks (which may require knowledge of other job descriptions) as may seem to be appropriate to the School Board or Administration.
16. Maintains satisfactory attendance, as defined in District policy and regulations.
17. Providing information to parents about the local school's procedures, instructional programs, and the names and roles of administrators and staff members.
18. Conducting meetings at school or in their homes for parents who request help in completing specific forms for school registration.
19. Providing information to parents about the resources available to them throughout the school system and community.
* Becoming familiar with the publications and services of the school system’s Parent Resource.
* Helping parents access community resources.
20. Making home visits to parents on student attendance.
21. Contacting parents to serve on school committees or to attend special events at the school.
22. Serving as coordinator for transportation arrangements for parents who request this assistance.
23. Serving as a contact person for parents to call with questions about the school services or specific activities and events.
24. Maintaining confidentiality in carrying out responsibilities.
25. Participating in school committee meetings as required by supervisor.
26. Submit monthly reports.
27. Liaison between juvenile tribal court system and the school.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
1. South Dakota Librarian Endorsement if possible
2. Possess a valid First Aid card if required
3. Possess a valid South Dakota Driver's License

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Days and hours to be arranged, with salary according to current schedule.
EVALUATION: Following the probationary period, performance of this job will be evaluated
in accordance with provisions of the School Board's policy on evaluation of personnel.
