JOB TITLE: Elementary Principal
FUNCTION OF THE JOB:
Plan and direct the instructional program and building management requirements of the elementary school to which assigned.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES:
- Provide leadership in the area of curriculum development.
- Supervise, observe and evaluate instructional staff.
- Conduct evaluation conferences with staff and provide suggestions for improvement of deficiencies.
- Evaluate the overall educational program at the building level.
- Assist teachers in the area of student discipline.
- Conduct staff meetings and provide building-wide in-service.
- Oversee the budget of the building and see to it that teachers have adequate supplies and materials.
- Work with and help coordinate the Special Services Programs to provide for the special needs of students.
- Schedule staffing and placement committee meetings for Special Services students.
- Maintain adequate student records of grades, standardized tests and health records as well as other pertinent information.
- Administer and oversee federal programs at the building level.
- See to it that a safe building and playground are maintained.
- Work with students from time to time in order to keep in touch with the first line of our educational responsibility.
- Provide for an adequate program in the use of instructional television.
- Coordinate the work of the school lunch supervisors.
- Provide for the smooth operation of the school lunch program.
- Work with staff on the selection of proper educational materials: basic, audio-visual and library.
- Coordinate and direct students and staff in the proper procedures for fire and civil defense drills.
- Conduct such drills at appropriate times.
- Work with staff on the use and maintenance of audio-visual equipment.
- Screen applicant credentials and conduct interviews with prospective new staff members.
- Coordinate the placement of student teachers at the building level.
- Observe, evaluate and hold conferences with student teachers.
- Supervise the elementary music staff.
- Coordinate the computer education program at the building level.
- Arrange for the acquisition of qualified substitute teachers when regular staff are absent.
- Coordinate the scheduling of parent-teacher conferences.
- Work to maintain a positive public relations program for the school.
- Hold meetings with parents on areas of mutual concern.
- Write and distribute a monthly newsletter to keep parents informed of the activities of the school.
- Maintain the flow of information to and from the central office to keep staff and the Superintendent abreast of the overall educational program of the building and system.
- Supervise the secretarial staff of the building.
- Assign teacher aides to appropriate areas or classroom.
- Supervise the standardized testing at the building level.
- Make arrangements for special programs such as field trips and fine arts programs.
- Supervise activity programs such as the music concerts, track meet and jump rope contest.
- Supervise the PE program at the building level.
- Approve and forward to the business office all requisitions for supplies and materials.
- Prepare all required reports.
- Delegate authority to responsible personnel to assume responsibility for the school in the absence of the principal.
- Make recommendations to the Superintendent and the Administrative team on improvements in school operation and policy.
- Participate in principal meetings, negotiation meetings, and such other meetings as are required or appropriate.
- Approve all field trips or excursions conducted by school personnel.
- Conduct inventories of school supplies, equipment and materials.
- Make recommendations concerning maintenance and repair of the school building and equipment.
- Perform other duties as necessary or assigned by the Superintendent.
