POSITION SUMMARY 
This position is responsible for planning and delivering engaging lessons to young students who are learning English as a second language, focusing on developing their foundation skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, while adapting instruction to meet individual needs and cultural backgrounds, all within an elementary school setting. As an Elementary English Language Learner Teacher, one will develop and implement educational curricular, assess student progress, and provide hands-on training in a classroom setting. This position requires a deep understanding of English, excellent communications, skills and a passion for teaching and mentoring.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Use a variety of assessment procedures, samples, and instruments to evaluate student learning and provide specific and immediate feedback.
Enable students to gain insight and practical skills in the area of English as a new language.
Provide consultation to classroom teachers regarding inclusion needs of English Language Learners.
Use a variety of assessment procedures, samples, and instruments to evaluate student learning and provide specific and immediate feedback.
Enhance student application of basic writing, communication, and literacy skills that relate to English has a second language.  
Teach the approved district curriculum to assigned students.
Ensure that all activities conform to district guidelines.
Employ instructional strategies that address a variety of learning styles and strengths.
Use a variety of assessment procedures, samples, and instruments to evaluate student learning and provide specific and immediate feedback.
Maximize available amount of time for instruction.
Establish and maintain a positive learning environment and respond to the individual needs of students.
Maintain an organized and attractive physical classroom environment.
Set high expectations and standards for student achievement and behavior as appropriate to age and level of development.
Recognize and address needs of students on a regular basis, seeking assistance of district specialists as required.
Maintain appropriate classroom management and supervision for all assigned students.
Take all reasonable and necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
Meet and instruct assigned classes in the location(s) and time(s) designated.
Coordinate and supervise field trips as appropriate for assigned teaching area.
Assist with the activities of student organizations as assigned.
Attend staff meetings and serve on committees.
Strive to maintain and improve professional competence by participating in district-initiated staff development.
Communicate effectively and clearly with others.
Maintain regular communication with families.
Use appropriate and effective written and spoken language.
Maintain accurate, complete and correct records as required by law, school district policy and school administrative requirements.
Prepare appropriate lesson plans for substitute teachers.
Use appropriate technology for both instructional and management functions.
Adhere to all district policies, handbooks, and regulations.
Support the philosophy and mission of the Aberdeen School District

Knowledge and proficiency in using lessons plans to teach students how to read, write, speak and listen.

Knowledge of computer software including word processing, spreadsheet and database applications consistent for this position.
Ability to perform mathematical calculations required of this position.
Ability to communicate clearly, concisely and effectively in English in both written and verbal form.
Ability to prepare and maintain accurate and concise records and reports.
Ability to maintain professionalism at all times.
Ability to maintain effective working relationships with individuals and students within and outside the organization.
Ability to work the allocated hours of the position and respond after hours as needed.

This work requires the occasional to frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, frequently requires standing, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions and requires walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and reaching with hands and arms.
Work has standard vision requirements.
Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.
Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data and observing general surroundings and activities.
Work has little to no exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
Work is generally in a moderately noisy office setting (e.g. business office, light traffic). 
 
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in an approved teaching education program.
Current and valid South Dakota teaching certificate with endorsements in English as a New Language (ENL).
Must be highly qualified for the position according to South Dakota Department of Education guidelines and regulations.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum of two (2) years industry experience
Previous teaching experience
 
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Employment is contingent upon a Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance, paid for by the applicant.
