Job Description:

REPORTS TO: Building principal where assigned for counseling responsibilities and superintendent for purposes of evaluation

WORKS WITH: Other counselors, principals, certified and classified staff, students and parents

QUALIFICATIONS: South Dakota certification (Masters); classroom and counseling experience preferred; excellent interpersonal relationship skills

JOB SUMMARY: Works with students on a daily basis to provide awareness, prevention and intervention counseling services to meet the mission of the district; works with parents and students for intervention counseling activities

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Talks with and counsels students individually and in groups.
Assists in identifying individual needs of students within the counseling setting.
Observes students in a classroom setting to gain understanding of students while they interact in a classroom environment
Promotes positive attitudes and values with and among students.
Assists teachers, administrators, and parents in helping children succeed in school and personal setting.
Administers tests to provide information about abilities, achievement, interests and needs.
Assists with the identification of and referrals for crisis situations
Coordinates efforts with other school specialists to meet the needs of students in all elementary schools.
Facilitates parent, teacher, and staff meetings as needed to meet the needs of students in all elementary schools.
Plans, participates, and delivers classroom guidance curriculum programs.
Maintains student counseling records in accordance with district, state, and federal policies and regulations
Practices all ethical and legal standards of the counseling profession.
Facilitates referrals to outside agencies as necessary to meet student needs.
Reports abuse to appropriate agencies as per local, state and federal policies and procedures.
Perform other duties as assigned.
 
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Be able to stand, sit, and walk without fatigue or discomfort
Be able to lift and carry 25 pounds

EVALUATION: The performance of this job will be determined in accordance with provisions of the evaluation policy and procedures of the Board of Education.

BOARD RELATIONS:  Provides information to board members upon request and attends all board meetings or other meetings as requested by the superintendent.

PUBLIC RELATIONS:  Presents a proactive and positive image of the school, students, and staff and fosters the district mission of enabling all students to succeed in an ever-changing world.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT AND HOURS OF DUTY:  8:00 to 4:00 daily; 201 days
