Reports To:
Director of Athletics/Director of Special Education

REQUIREMENTS:                              
 
Education Level: 
Bachelor’s degree plus theory of coaching or coaching principles and prevention and care of athletic injuries or coaching first aid or a qualified first aid course.  Certification in Physical Education or Special Education is required.
 
Experience Desired: 
Previous participation and/or appropriate coaching experience.  Experience working with special education students preferred.
 
Other Requirements: 
Demonstrate a genuine and up-to-date knowledge of the sport including fundamentals, rules, and strategy.  Maintain coaching philosophy consistent with the Aberdeen School District.  Demonstrated loyalty to the athletic department, program, and head coach.  Demonstrated skills in human relations, leadership, and conflict management.  Ability to communicate effectively and relate well with students, school personnel, and parents.  Maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
 
Physical Requirements:
Possess sufficient strength, agility, dexterity, and mobility to carry out all performance responsibilities.  Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

Clearances: 
Employment is contingent upon a Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance, paid for by the applicant.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:
Assist the head coach in program execution and development.
Fulfill all duties and assignments enthusiastically.
Manage and direct the team under the head coach's supervision.
Work to improve coaching expertise through professional development.
Attend practices three times weekly for eight weeks.
Supervise and maintain locker room and practice areas to ensure the health and safety of the athletes.
Chaperone, supervise, and remain with the athletes when traveling to competitive events.
Assist students with functional daily living skills such as dressing, feeding, and bathing.
Maintain proper rapport with athletes, parents, and fans.
Operate within the constitution and by-laws of the South Dakota State Special Olympics Association.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics and Director of Special Education.

Salary Range:
According to the negotiated agreement.
