REPORTS TO:
Director of Athletics

QUALIFICATIONS:
Coaching experience is preferred.

A.    Education Level: High School diploma.
 
B.    Experience Desired: Cheerleading experience preferred.
 
C.    Other Requirements: Excellent verbal and written communication.  Positive human relations skills.  Strong skills in detailed and accurate work.  Good organizational skills.  Patience and a positive attitude toward people is essential.  Ability to work under pressure and with minimal supervision.  Ability to maintain a high degree of office confidentiality in all work assignments.  Managerial and budgeting skills.  Computer literate.  Frequent travel is required.  Be certified in AACCA (American Association of Cheerleading Coaches and Administrators) or become certified when accepting the position.
                                                           
D.    Physical Requirements: This position requires constant hand-eye/mind-eye coordination, dialing, grasping, keyboarding, and repetitive motions with wrists, hands, and fingers.  Walking, sitting, scheduling, and talking are constantly required.  Visual acuity, hearing, and speaking.  Ability to lift up to one hundred thirty (130) pounds.  Standing, climbing, stooping, kneeling.  Frequent exposure to heat and cold.  Will work irregular/flexible hours.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:
Assume responsibility for their level within the overall program.
•     Will coach their team and supervise all other coaches at their level within the program. 
•     Will give guidance and direction to all other coaches at their level. 
•     Will implement all District and Athletic Department policies. 
•     Will, under the direction of the Athletic Director, evaluate all coaches at their level.
•     Assist the Athletic Director in the selection and assignment of all assistant coaches.
•     Assist the Athletic Director in scheduling practice facilities and contests at their level.
•     Assist the Athletic Director in the purchasing and care of equipment and uniforms.
•     Will insure each student has met the requirements for eligibility.
•     Assist the Athletic Director and Head Coach in budgetary matters.
•     Assist the Athletic Director and head Coach in preparing facilities studies and usage.
•     Assist the head Coach in off-season activities where it is appropriate for their level.
•     Supervise and maintain locker room and practice areas to insure the health and safety of the athletes.
•     Supervise and remain with athletes when traveling to competitive events.
•     Assist the trainer in rehabilitation/supervision of injured athletes.
•     Care for, maintain, and inventory equipment and uniforms within their level.
•     Work with the local media whenever it is appropriate.
•     Attend community, booster and departmental functions that relate to their sport and level.
•     Operate within and support the constitution, by-laws and guidelines of the South Dakota High School Activities Association, the District and Athletic Department.
•     Stay current on the trends within their sport and the Athletic Department.
•     Work closely with support, maintenance, grounds, and janitorial personnel in order to insure inter-department cooperation and cohesiveness.
•     Maintain active membership in the state and national coaching organizations for their sport and athletics in general.
•     Prepare proper itineraries for the Athletic Office, assistant coaches, athletes, and parents for all contests that involve travel.
•     Cooperate with and maintain a positive relationship with other sports coaches and work to promote the overall development of the entire Athletic Department.
•     Perform other duties as assigned by the Athletic Director or principals involved.

All coaches for all athletic activities will be required to have completed the following coursework through the NFHSLearn.com website with NO equivalencies and NO “grandfather” clauses being allowed for substitution:
Fundamentals of Coaching (one-time requirement)
First Aid, Health and Safety for Coaches (must be taken every two years)
Concussion in Sport:  What You Need to Know (must be taken annually)
Other courses necessary to complete requirements of SDHSAA for coaching education.

All coaches’ requirements can be tracked by the public through the “Coach Search” feature of the NFHSLearn.com website, which lists all courses completed by a given coach that are still active for fulfilling the requirements as set by the SDHSAA Board of Directors.
