Job Title: Middle and High School CTE Family and Consumer Science (FACS) with or without Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) Advisor or other Extracurricular Openings

Location: Canistota School District 43-1 Canistota, SD

Job Type: Full-Time (2025-2026 School Year)

Pay rate: Commensurate with experience and district guidelines

  • Base salary of $47,200. Salary could increase depending on experience and qualifications, in accordance with the district pay schedule.

  • Comprehensive benefits package including health insurance and retirement plans.

Position Overview

The Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) Educator is responsible for providing dynamic and engaging instruction in a variety of life skills, including but not limited to personal finance, nutrition and wellness, child development, consumer education, and career readiness. The educator will create a positive learning environment that prepares students to lead responsible, productive, and fulfilling lives as individuals and family members.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver age-appropriate FACS curriculum that aligns with state and national standards.

  • Plan, prepare, and implement instructional activities that actively engage students in meaningful learning experiences.

  • Teach a range of FACS courses, which may include culinary arts, child development, fashion and design, personal finance, and other life management skills.

  • Integrate technology and hands-on learning opportunities into daily lessons.

  • Promote critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.

  • Monitor and assess student progress through formal and informal assessment methods.

  • Maintain an organized and safe learning environment, including proper use of equipment and materials.

  • Foster a classroom culture that encourages collaboration, responsibility, and respect.

  • Collaborate with colleagues to align FACS programs with school-wide educational goals.

  • Provide guidance and mentorship to students participating in related extracurricular activities such as FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America).

  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance, progress, and grades in compliance with school and district policies.

  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, and colleagues to support student success.

  • Participate in professional development opportunities to stay current with best practices in FACS education.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the principal or designated administrator.

Qualifications

Education and Certification:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Family and Consumer Sciences Education or a related field.

  • Valid teaching certification or licensure in Family and Consumer Sciences as required by the state.

Experience:

  • Previous teaching experience is preferred but not required.

  • Experience with project-based learning and hands-on instruction is highly desirable.

  • Familiarity with South Dakota Perkins grants, including data collection, reporting, and program compliance, is preferred, but not required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong understanding of child development, nutrition, financial literacy, and other core FACS content areas.

  • Ability to design and implement engaging lesson plans that integrate real-world applications.

  • Excellent classroom management and organizational skills.

  • Proficiency in integrating technology into teaching.

  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with diverse stakeholders.

  • Ability to inspire and motivate students to achieve academic and personal growth.

Working Conditions

  • School classroom setting with standard hours aligned to the academic calendar.

  • Occasional participation in school activities outside regular hours.

  • School district is 1-to-1 for technology. Educator will receive a school district laptop.

  • Classroom will have Promethean board

Physical Demands

  • The job may require standing, sitting, and moving about the classroom for extended periods.

  • Occasional lifting of materials or equipment related to classroom instruction.
