Job Title: The K-12 Vocal Teacher / Fine Arts Classroom Instructor

Location: Canistota School District 43-1 Canistota, SD

Job Type: Full-Time (2025-2026 School Year)

Pay rate: Commensurate with experience and district guidelines

  • Base salary of $47,200. Salary could increase depending on experience and qualifications, in accordance with the district pay schedule.

Position Overview

The K-12 Choir Teacher / Fine Arts Instructor is responsible for developing and leading a dynamic and inclusive choral program for students across all grade levels (K-12) while fostering an appreciation of music in a general classroom setting. This educator will inspire students to develop vocal technique, musical literacy, performance skills, and a lifelong love of music. The position also includes teaching a Fine Arts class such as Music Theory or Music History/Appreciation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Instruction and Classroom Management

    • Develop and implement age-appropriate, standards-aligned curriculum for K-12 Vocal and a Fine Arts class (To Be Determined).

    • Provide engaging instruction in vocal music, choral performance, and general music theory.

    • Design and deliver lessons that explore diverse musical genres, historical periods, and cultural contexts in Music Appreciation.

    • Create a positive, inclusive classroom environment that encourages student participation, creativity, and respect for diverse musical traditions.

    • Differentiate instruction to accommodate varying student abilities and learning styles.

  • Program Development and Management

    • Direct and rehearse school choirs for concerts, community performances, and competitions.

    • Organize and lead extracurricular music-related activities, such as choir clubs or honor choirs.

    • Plan, coordinate, and conduct choral performances, including school concerts, assemblies, and special events.

  • Collaboration and Communication

    • Collaborate with other music and arts staff to promote interdisciplinary learning opportunities.

    • Communicate effectively with students, parents, colleagues, and administration regarding program goals, student progress, and upcoming events.

    • Participate in parent-teacher conferences, faculty meetings, and professional development opportunities.

  • Administrative Duties

    • Maintain accurate records of student attendance, grades, and performance data.

    • Manage classroom resources and maintain an organized, safe learning environment.

    • Ensure compliance with school policies and district guidelines related to student safety and conduct.

Qualifications

  • Education and Certification

    • Bachelor’s degree in Music Education or a related field.

    • Valid teaching certification in Music Education for K-12 (or eligibility to obtain certification).

  • Skills and Competencies

    • Strong knowledge of vocal music techniques, choral conducting, and general music education.

    • Ability to play piano or accompany rehearsals is preferred.

    • Excellent classroom management and instructional skills.

    • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.

    • Commitment to fostering an inclusive and diverse learning environment.

Work Environment:
Ability to stand, walk, and move around the classroom and rehearsal spaces for extended periods. Flexibility to attend evening performances, concerts, and related school events.
