CANISTOTA SCHOOL DISTRICT HEAD COACH JOB DESCRIPTION
Essential Function & Duties
Coaching and Training:
The Head Coach will remain current with all SDHSAA and Canistota School District requirements.
The activities director will evaluate the head coach. After the season, the head coach will evaluate the assistant coaches and submit the evaluations to the activities director.
Design comprehensive training programs tailored to individual players' and team's needs and skill levels.
Utilize video analysis and other technological tools to provide feedback and enhance player development and knowledge of the activity (rules, regulations, equipment, and techniques).
Organize skill-specific drills and exercises to improve fundamentals.
Create practice plans and duties for assistant coaches during practice and games.
Foster a positive and supportive learning environment.
Implement team chemistry and cohesion strategies, such as team-building activities.
Delegate responsibility to the assistant and volunteer coaches as appropriate.
Participate in pre-season and post-season meetings with the activities director, parents, and student-athletes. These post-season meetings will serve as an evaluation conference.
Game Management:
Develop scouting reports on opponents, analyzing their strengths, weaknesses, and tendencies.
Create game plans that capitalize on the team's strengths while exploiting the opposition's weaknesses.
Communicate game strategies effectively to players, ensuring they understand their roles and responsibilities.
Make adjustments during games based on observations of opponent tactics and communication with players and assistant coaches.
Maintain a positive attitude throughout the activity, including pre-game, half-time, or post-game speeches or interactions.
Manage the team's energy and morale, encouraging and motivating during challenging moments.
Maintain a positive example for student-athletes toward assigned officials and judges.
Student-Athlete Development:
Observe players during practice and competitions to provide individualized feedback and guidance on technique, strategy, and performance.
Support the holistic development of student-athletes, addressing their athletic skills, academic progress, and personal growth.
Serve as a mentor and role model, imparting valuable life lessons such as discipline, resilience, and teamwork.
Foster a culture of accountability and responsibility, where players take ownership of their development and contribute positively to the team dynamic.
Coordinate a strength training program throughout the year (fall, winter, spring, summer) to enhance student-athletes' athletic performance.
Follows established procedures in the event of an athlete’s injury.
Collaborate with other coaches and weight room supervisors to track student-athlete participation.
Attend and encourage participation in a strength and conditioning program and open gym sessions throughout the school year, especially during the summertime.
Program Administration:
Work with the activities director to coordinate logistics for practices, games, and other team activities, including scheduling facilities, transportation, and equipment.
Communicating with players will occur through a school district administration-approved social media platform.
Follow state, conference, and district regulations governing SDHSAA-sanctioned programs to ensure compliance with all relevant policies and regulations, including eligibility requirements, safety protocols, and code of conduct standards.
Maintains eligibility forms, emergency data cards, insurance records, equipment inventory, and other related records.
Ensure all coaches (head coach, assistant coach, and volunteers) model nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.
Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior and provides proper supervision of athletes at all times.
Collaborate with booster clubs, fundraising committees, and other support groups to secure additional resources for the program.
Attend clinics, seminars, and in-service programs to improve your coaching skills and stay current with new trends in coaching, training, conditioning, and safety procedures.
Represent the Canistota School District professionally in demeanor, language, and conduct (based on standards established by the activities director).
Assign duties to assistant coaches or volunteer coaches as necessary.
Follows established procedures for the proper care, maintenance, and requisitioning of equipment, supplies, and uniforms.
Recruitment and Retention:
Encourage young men and women to participate in sports and other co-curricular activities other than his/her own, but do not attempt to influence the specific sport or activity.
Cultivate relationships with youth coaches and local clubs to identify and develop talent.
Provide leadership in his or her program for all levels (Junior High, 9th, 10th, JV, and Varsity) of the sport/activity.
Implement strategies to retain existing student-athletes, including fostering a positive team culture, recognizing player contributions, and promptly addressing concerns or grievances.
Provide opportunities for player leadership and involvement in decision-making processes, empowering players to take ownership of their experience.
Promote the program through social media and community outreach.
