Job Title: High School CTE Instructor (High School Industrial Arts, Animal Science, Plant Science, Construction Trades, Woodworking, and Small Engine Repair) and FFA/SkillsUSA advisor

Location: Canistota School District 43-1 Canistota, SD

Job Type: Full-Time (2025-2026 School Year)

Pay rate: Commensurate with experience and district guidelines

  • Base salary of $47,200. Salary could increase depending on experience and qualifications, in accordance with the district pay schedule.

  • Comprehensive benefits package including health insurance and retirement plans.

Position Overview

The High School CTE Instructor could be a combination, but not limited to (Industrial Arts, Animal Science, Plant Science, Construction Trades, Woodworking, Small Engine Repair) with FFA/SkillsUSA advisor. The instructor is responsible for planning, organizing, and implementing an engaging instructional program that prepares students for careers in technical, agricultural, and industrial fields. An applicant does not need to be qualified in all areas in order to apply. This teacher will foster student growth in practical skills, critical thinking, and problem-solving through a combination of hands-on learning and theoretical instruction.

Key Responsibilities:Instructional Planning and Delivery:

  • Design and implement a curriculum that covers industrial arts, animal science, plant science, construction trades, and woodworking.

  • Develop engaging, hands-on lesson plans and projects that integrate technical skills and academic concepts.

  • Teach students the fundamentals of construction, woodworking, and the safe use of related tools and machinery.

  • Provide instruction on agricultural topics, including animal care, plant cultivation, and sustainable practices.

  • Incorporate project-based learning opportunities, such as building structures, creating wood projects, or managing gardens and livestock.

Student Assessment and Support:

  • Assess student progress through assignments, projects, tests, and practical demonstrations.

  • Provide constructive feedback to support student learning and skill development.

  • Identify and address individual learning needs and provide additional support or enrichment as needed.

  • Maintain accurate records of student performance, attendance, and achievements.

Classroom and Workshop Management:

  • Establish and maintain a safe, inclusive, and organized learning environment in classrooms, laboratories, and workshops.

  • Teach and enforce safety protocols for the use of tools, machinery, and equipment.

  • Maintain tools, equipment, and materials in good working order and ensure the workshop is well-stocked and orderly.

Professional Collaboration and Development:

  • Collaborate with colleagues, industry professionals, and community organizations to enhance the curriculum and provide students with real-world learning opportunities.

  • Participate in professional development to stay current with advancements in the fields of construction, woodworking, industrial arts, and agriculture.

  • Serve as a mentor or advisor to student organizations such as FFA (Future Farmers of America) or SkillsUSA.

Other Duties:

  • Oversee extracurricular activities related to construction, woodworking, agriculture, or technical trades, such as school garden projects, building competitions, or woodworking showcases.

  • Coordinate student participation in relevant internships, work-based learning experiences, or industry certifications.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the administration.

Qualifications:Education and Certification:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Technology, Agricultural Education, Construction, or a related field.

  • Valid teaching certification/licensure in the state of employment.


Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of construction trades, woodworking, industrial arts, animal science, and plant science.

  • Proficiency in operating and maintaining tools, machinery, and laboratory equipment.

  • Ability to create an engaging and supportive learning environment.

  • Effective communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.

  • Commitment to fostering student success and promoting career readiness.

Experience:

  • Prior teaching experience is preferred but not required.

  • Experience in construction, woodworking, agriculture, or technical trades is a plus.

Work Environment:
The teacher will work in classrooms, laboratories, and workshops, which may involve exposure to potentially hazardous tools, machinery, or substances. Proper safety precautions and protective equipment are required.
