Job Description:
The Self-Contained Special Education Teacher is responsible for designing and delivering individualized educational programs for students with moderate to severe disabilities in a self-contained classroom setting. This role involves creating a supportive, inclusive, and safe learning environment to foster academic, social, emotional, and behavioral growth.
Key Responsibilities
Instructional Planning and Delivery
- Develop and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) tailored to each student's needs.
- Design and deliver engaging lesson plans aligned with state standards, curriculum guidelines, and IEP goals.
- Utilize diverse instructional strategies, assistive technology, and adaptive materials to meet varied learning needs.
Classroom Management
- Maintain a structured and positive classroom environment conducive to learning and development.
- Implement behavior management plans and interventions as specified in students' IEPs.
- Promote social-emotional learning and encourage positive interactions among students.
Assessment and Documentation
- Monitor, assess, and document student progress regularly.
- Maintain accurate records of attendance, IEP compliance, and assessment data.
- Prepare and present progress reports during IEP meetings, parent-teacher conferences, and other reviews.
Collaboration and Communication
- Work collaboratively with related service providers, paraprofessionals, and other staff to support student success.
- Communicate regularly with families to update them on their child’s progress and involve them in the learning process.
- Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings to contribute to decision-making regarding student needs.
Skills and Competencies
- Knowledge of special education laws and best practices, including IDEA and 504 regulations.
- Strong instructional, organizational, and classroom management skills.
- Ability to differentiate instruction and adapt to diverse learning needs.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
Experience
- Prior teaching experience in a self-contained classroom setting (preferred).
- Experience working with students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual, emotional, and physical challenges.
