Job Title: 2025-2026 High School English Language Arts Educator

Location: Canistota School District 43-1 Canistota, SD

Job Type: Full-Time, 2025-2026 School Year

Salary: Commensurate with experience and district guidelines

  • Base salary of $47,200. Salary could increase depending on experience and qualifications, in accordance with the district salary schedule.

Position Overview:

We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated High School English Teacher to join our educational team. The successful candidate will have a strong passion for literature, language arts, and fostering critical thinking and communication skills. This role involves planning and implementing engaging lesson plans that meet state standards, assessing student progress, and supporting diverse learning needs in the classroom.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Instruction and Curriculum Development:

    • Design and implement lesson plans that align with district and state standards for grades 9-12 English, including literature, composition, grammar, and vocabulary.

    • Foster a dynamic and inclusive classroom environment that promotes a love for reading, writing, and critical thinking.

    • Integrate various forms of media and technology to enhance learning experiences and accommodate diverse learning styles.

    • Develop a curriculum that explores a wide range of literature, including diverse voices and genres.

  • Student Assessment and Support:

    • Evaluate student performance through tests, essays, projects, and participation.

    • Provide constructive feedback and tailored support to help each student reach their academic goals.

    • Identify and assist students who need additional help through one-on-one tutoring or alternative resources.

  • Classroom Management:

    • Establish and maintain a positive, respectful classroom environment that encourages learning.

    • Address classroom behavior promptly and professionally in accordance with school policies.

    • Create a classroom culture that promotes respect, inclusivity, and intellectual curiosity.

  • Communication and Collaboration:

    • Maintain regular communication with students, parents, and guardians about progress, assignments, and any concerns.

    • Collaborate with colleagues, school staff, and administrators to develop and implement instructional strategies and school-wide initiatives.

    • Participate in departmental meetings, school events, and professional development activities.

  • Professional Responsibilities:

    • Stay current with educational best practices and continuing education to enhance instructional skills.

    • Uphold school policies and values, contributing to a positive school culture.

    • Participate in parent-teacher conferences, school committees, and other extracurricular school activities as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in English, English Education, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.

  • Certification: Valid South Dakota teaching license or certification for high school English.

  • Experience: Prior experience teaching high school English or secondary education is preferred.

  • Skills:

    • Strong knowledge of English language and literature, composition, and effective teaching methods.

    • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

    • Ability to manage a classroom effectively and create a safe, engaging environment for all students.

    • Proficient in the use of educational technology and multimedia resources.

Working Conditions:

  • Typical classroom setting within a high school environment.

  • May require attendance at after-school meetings or events as part of contractual obligations.

  • Some standing, lifting, and movement around the classroom and school campus.
