Position Overview:
Lake Area Technical College is seeking a skilled and experienced Precision Machine Instructor to teach Precision Machining Technology to inmates at Mike Durfee State Prison. This part-time position focuses on instructing students in the safe and efficient operation of machining tools, including both manual and CNC equipment. The ideal candidate will have extensive machining knowledge, strong communication skills, and a passion for teaching in a unique and challenging environment.
Reports to: Precision Machining Department Supervisor, Dean of Academics, Vice President
Key Responsibilities:
Instruct students in classroom, lab, and online settings, focusing on manual and CNC mills and lathes, tooling, blueprint reading, precision measuring, and associated math skills.
Teach safe operating procedures for equipment such as pedestal grinders, drill presses, and engine lathes.
Assist with the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the Precision Machining curriculum.
Ensure compliance with safety procedures during student operation of equipment and overall lab safety.
Maintain an inventory of tools and equipment and ensure their proper functioning.
Collaborate with co-instructors and support staff to create an effective teaching team.
Advise students on academic progress, registration, and address related concerns.
Participate in student recruitment efforts and represent the department and Lake Area Technical College to potential students and external partners.
Serve as a positive role model for students, maintaining professionalism and building rapport.
Foster industry connections by working with the Precision Machining Advisory Board.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Extensive knowledge of precision machining technology, including safe operation of equipment like pedestal grinders, drill presses, and engine lathes.
Ability to teach tooling, blueprint reading, precision measuring, and related math skills.
Minimum of three years of related experience or a diploma/AAS degree in Precision Machining required.
Proficiency in CNC programming and related machining software. Experience with learning management systems is advantageous.
Excellent interpersonal communication, creative thinking, and problem-solving skills.

Terms of Employment:
Work schedule: 190-day contract- Four days per week (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 7:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.).
Position starts: November 1st, 2024.
Location: Mike Durfee State Prison, Springfield, SD.
Salary Range: $51,172.64 - $76,757.95
Salary and benefits set by the Watertown School Board in accordance with the state postsecondary technical college instructor salary formula.
