Job Title: 2025-2026 High School Social Science Educator

Location: Canistota School District 43-1 Canistota, SD

Job Summary:

Canistota School District is seeking a dedicated and passionate Social Science Educator to join our high school faculty. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of social sciences, including history, government, geography, economics, psychology, and sociology. This position requires a commitment to fostering critical thinking, cultural awareness, and civic engagement in students. The educator will be responsible for creating an engaging learning environment that encourages students to explore and analyze social systems, historical events, and their impact on society.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and deliver a comprehensive social science curriculum aligned with South Dakota standards and educational goals.

  • Teach courses in various social science subjects such as U.S. history, world history, government, economics, geography, psychology, and sociology.

  • Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of high school students.

  • Employ diverse teaching strategies to accommodate different learning styles and engage students in critical analysis, discussions, and hands-on activities.

  • Design and implement assessments that accurately reflect student progress and understanding.

  • Foster an environment of respect, inclusion, and understanding of diverse cultures, perspectives, and experiences.

  • Stay current with educational best practices and integrate technology effectively into the classroom.

  • Encourage and facilitate students' participation in debates, projects, and extracurricular activities related to social sciences.

  • Collaborate with colleagues and administration to support student learning and contribute to the school’s academic community.

  • Attend school events, parent-teacher conferences, and professional development sessions as required.

  • Provide individualized support to students who may need additional help or enrichment.

  • Maintain clear communication with students, parents, and staff regarding academic progress and classroom expectations.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences, Education, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).

  • Valid teaching certification in South Dakota for secondary education in social sciences.

  • Strong knowledge of social science content and pedagogy.

  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to inspire and motivate students.

  • Experience with technology integration in the classroom.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience teaching in a high school setting.

  • Knowledge of current trends in social sciences education.

  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team of educators.

  • Experience in mentoring or advising student groups or extracurricular activities related to social studies.

Working Conditions:

  • Full-time position.

  • Standard school hours with occasional evening or weekend events.

  • Collaborative and supportive teaching environment.

Salary & Benefits:

  • Base salary of $47,200. Salary could increase depending on experience and qualifications, in accordance with the district salary schedule.

  • Comprehensive benefits package including health insurance and retirement plans.
