Adult Education and Literacy (AEL) Instructor - Brookings, SD Location

 
Lake Area Technical College is seeking a dedicated and experienced individual to join our team as an Adult Education and Literacy (AEL) Instructor. This position is responsible for providing high-quality instruction and support to adult learners in the Brookings, SD location for those who wish to develop basic skills like reading, language, and math, primarily to prepare for the high school equivalency exam. The ideal candidate will have a passion for teaching, a commitment to student success, and the ability to adapt to the diverse needs of our students.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Adult Education and Literacy:

Provide instruction of Adult Basic Education, Pre-GED, and GED courses using instructional methods geared toward the adult learner in a classroom setting.
Plan lessons and curriculum based on the learning needs of culturally diverse and multi-skill level students which prepare students to pass the GED tests and/or enhance basic education skills.
Responsible for teaching the GED test areas (literature, writing, social studies, science and math) or adult basic education skills areas (writing, math, language)
Plan and prepare relevant and practical class lessons and monitor student performance.
Implement a variety of instructional delivery methods, that include group or individualized instruction, as well as computer programs that help students make learning gains.
Rely on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Perform a variety of tasks.
May lead and direct the work of others.
Complete and maintain appropriate student registration, attendance, and assessment records. Ensure the timely submission of data.
Responsible for effective classroom management that enhances student learning.
Administer and interpret various assessments, including TABE, GED Official Practice Tests, STARS Reading, BEST Plus 3.0, and BEST Literacy 2.0 to evaluate student progress and needs.
Work with participants in evaluating educational needs and developing individual study plans.
Partner with and refer participants to appropriate community services.
 

REPORTS TO:  AEL Director, Assistant Dean of Academics, Vice President

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge and experience in adult education and literacy, developmental education, and/or English Language Learner instruction preferred.
Bachelor’s degree preferred.
Teaching certificate preferred.
Prior teaching and curriculum development experience with the ability to differentiate instruction.
Proficiency in learning management systems and Microsoft programs.
Strong interpersonal skills with a commitment to fostering a team environment and supporting student success.
Bilingual abilities are a plus.
National Career Readiness Certificate Level Silver or higher is a plus.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

Knowledge of adult learner and alternative educational methods and have the ability to apply these methods for adults and multicultural students.
Ability to teach students of diverse abilities and backgrounds and overcome barriers to success in a multi-level class.
Ability to build a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students. Ability to relate well to different groups of students of different ages and ability levels.
Must be computer literate.
Ability to use a variety of audio-visual equipment.
Must have good classroom management skills.
Must have strong desire to work with people from a broad range of backgrounds.
Team-player who can collaborate with colleagues.
Participate in curriculum development.
Attend in-service, staff meetings and state trainings.
Maintain clean and professional classroom environment.
Maintain participant files, including written correspondence, telephone calls, and computerized record systems.
Possess excellent communication and organizational skills.
Enthusiasm for the subject material that will foster a love of learning by students.

Salary Range    -$45,000.00 / Per Year
Shift Type    -Full-Time

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

200-day contract. Compensation set by the Watertown School Board. The position is partially funded by grants and subject to continued funding.
