Job Description:

PRIMARY FUNCTION:    

To develop in each student an appreciation of American ideas and cultural heritage; to develop proficiency in the use of social studies inquiry skills and concepts; to motivate each student to understand and exercise his/her rights, privileges, and responsibilities as a citizen; to develop understanding of the geographical, historical, cultural, economic and political factors which influence the development of world political factors which influence the development of world regions; to encourage students to develop sound opinions based on the study of facts concerning the operation of political and economic systems.

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBLITIES:

Teach courses in social studies, as assigned, using adopted courses of study and other appropriate learning activities.
Instruct students in citizenship and related subject matter as pertains to the course being taught.
Develop a balanced social studies program involving factual background material, material on current events, student interaction, and other appropriate activities designed to encourage students to develop skills, draw conclusions, improve inter-personal relationships, make value judgments based on scientific methods of inquiry.
Provide individual and small group instruction and interaction, when and where appropriate in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of the student.
Make current material from the mass media available to students; plan and guide discussions of current events against the background of the geographical environment and history of the area being studied.
Maintain standards of student behavior to provide an orderly and productive classroom environment.
Maintain professional competence through in-service education provided by the district and self-selected professional growth activities.
Select and requisition books and instructional aids and maintain the required inventory records.
Evaluate each student’s performance, knowledge and skills in the course being taught.
Communicate with parents/guardians regarding student progress.
Identify student needs, refer students in need of assistance and cooperate with other professional staff members in assessing and assisting with learning or other problems which may affect the student’s ability or opportunity to learn.
Supervise students in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned workday.
Cooperate with the building principal in the evaluation process in compliance with the board policies and the Lennox Education Association Master Contract.
Participate in curriculum and other developmental programs within the school assignment and/or on a district level.
Participate in faculty committees and sponsorship of student activities.
Perform other tasks and duties as may be assigned.
